ANDINA: THE SOUND OF THE PERUVIAN ANDES

Excited to announce our label Tiger's Milk Records release ANDINA: Huayno, Carnaval and Cumbia - The Sound of the Peruvian Andes 1968-1978. A window into the full-blooded, captivating spirit of music from the Andes, ANDINA shines a fresh perspective on Peru’s multifaceted heritage.

A co-release with Strut Records, the album is selected from records originally released between '68 and ‘78, upending clichéd ideas of Andean music and bringing to light the divergent, exciting traditions to have emerged from Peru’s strip of the iconic mountain range. Encompassing steady-grooving, Peruvian Cumbia rhythms, transcendent folkloric harp recordings and Lima big band groups taking influence from their highland neighbours, it boasts a diversity that will appeal to fans of jazz and Latin as well as tropical-minded DJs and deep-digging collectors.

ANDINA 7

ANDINA 7 is a limited edition, double-sided 7" picture disc featuring two gorgeous dishes from the Peruvian Andes and two tropical Peruvian bangers by Los Compadre del Ande (Cumbia) and La Peruanita (Huayno). The picture disc images are of Peruvian dishes with recipes that feature in our new cookbook ANDINA, available to order via Amazon.

La Mecedora by Los Compadres del Ande is a steady-grooving vocal cumbia and was originally released in 1966 on the album Happy Cumbia, but this version comes from the 7" released two years later.
Recuerda Corazón by La Peruanita is a track driven by a huayno groove - the pervading rhythm from the Andean mountain range. With transcendental harp and female vocals sung in Quechua, you can imagine this song taking centre stage at local pueblo carnavals.

SI TE MUERES MAÑANA

Our friends Kanaku y El Tigre were recently in Colombia and met many new friends. They decided to do a live session with them, where everyone was invited to show his own 'wave'. This is 'Si te mueres manaña' featuring the great Nicolai Fella.

Kanaku y El Tigre's ‘Quema Quema Quema’ is the first ever signing for our Tiger's Milk Records record label. ‘Quema Quema Quema’ meaning 'Burn, Burn, Burn in Spanish and is inspired by Kerouac’s ‘On the Road'.

Time for you to enjoy this version  "Si Te Mueres Mañana" Feat. Nicolai Fella. We absolutely love it.

PERU BOOM!!

Boom! Belt up and prepare for ascent. Our new bass heavy album from Tiger's Milk Records features the key Peruvian producers and DJs that have helped develop Lima’s reputation as ‘jewel in the crown’ of South America’s rave & party scenes. Peru Boom shows that those at the forefront of today’s music are carrying the flag for Peru’s musical heritage, bringing traditional and once popular sounds bang up to date, creating a new history influenced by the fast paced and modern city of Lima. We loved every minute of compiling and I can't wait for you to hear it

KANAKU Y EL TIGRE

Second album to be released on June 15 is our first ever artist signing. Peruvian indie-folk outfit Kanaku Y El Tigre's debut international album 'Quema Quema Quema' has been a long-time-a-coming (nearly 6 years and well worth the wait). It's already picked up radio play from the UK's BBC 6 Music including support from Lauren Laverne, Cerys Matthews, Gideon Coe and Don Letts. If you haven't checked the long-boarding video around the coastal roads of Lima, now is your time.

ADVENTURES IN FOOD & MUSIC: BERLIN

I spent a fun-filled 72 hours in Berlin with Tiger's Milk Records and Ceviche recently, as we presented our German cookbook at the Stadt Land Food Festival, hosted a Ceviche pop-up at Volta restaurant, launched Peru Bravo at Oye Records, hosted a Ceviche masterclass at Soho House Berlin and finished off with a DJ set at Auster Club. Berlin is one of my favourite cities and I couldn’t wait to share our food, music and love. Here's a fun video following our time there.

PERU BRAVO

Peru Bravo: Funk, Soul & Psych from Peru’s Radical Decade tells the whirlwind story of a culture in flux when, during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Lima boasted dozens of young bands, all full of ideas and spontaneity, and unfazed by the Political instability in Peru.
Featuring alternative heroes Traffic Sound and Laghonia alongside a selection of unheralded short-lived groups, Peru Bravo is a funk-fuelled ride through a radical decade. We had a lot of fun comilling the album and we're thrilled it's receiving a lot of love over the airwaves, including Lauren Laverne's Compilation of the Week on BBC 6 Music.

PERU MARAVILLOSO: OUR FIRST ALBUM IS BORN

Peru Maravilloso is the result of many years obsessively collecting Peruvian music – it’s in our blood. With a focus on ‘60s and ‘70s Latin and Tropical music, we have gone through our cherished vinyl collection and created a hand-picked selection full of unknown treasures from one of Peru’s most exciting musical eras. The painstaking process of putting together Peru Maravilloso was undertaken with the premise of
rooting and unearthing tracks that take the listener by surprise. Whilst recognising the music of cumbia, guaracha and the electric sound of chicha, Peru Maravilloso owes as much to soul-jazz, Latin-jazz, rock and psychedelic as it does to the traditional styles of Andean, Peruvian criollo and Latin. The response has been fantastic since we launched it in November 2013.
